Fibers in Textile sector.

Today I like to share with you about the importance of fiber in the textile sector. The history of apparels is too old in human society. The apparels/garments are the only one material, that the human being saves their from the heat, cold and expose one to another.

So, the fiber is the main and core materials to produce the garments. The natural fibers have been used in all cultures for making utilitarian products.  Different parts of the plant are used. Fibers can be extracted from the bark (banana, jute, hemp, ramie), stem (banana, palm, bamboo), leaf (palm, screw pine, sisal, agave), husk (coir), seeds (cotton), and grass (sikki, madhurkati, benakati, munj). Animal fibers are obtained from a variety of animal coats, and insect fibers from cocoons.

We know that many types of fibers are available in the present world. Here,I will discuss about the major types of fibers like natural fibers, linen fibers, cotton fibers, wool fibers, and man-made fibers.

Natural Fibers :

The history of natural fibers is too old. Egypt is the ancient country for the related history of fibers. The first composite material in history was apparently made with clay and straw in Egypt 3000 years ago to build walls. Hemp was cultivated in China in 2800 BC and is considered one of the oldest natural fibers to be taken in use for making products along with linen. Hemp in Greek and Latin terminology was cannabis that led to the word canvas as hemp was used for making sails of boats.    Flax or fine linen was used for burial shrouds of Egyptian pharaohs. Similarly, nettle was used for making fishing nets in olden times.
India is rich in plant resources and the use of a variety of natural fibers such as banana, pineapple, sisal, hemp, coconut, palm, grasses etc was widely prevalent in olden times. Their use became limited once cotton acquired the prime status of plant fibers. In cotton production, organic cotton accounts for a very small percentage of total cotton production. Silk, linen, and jute are other natural fibers that have continued to enjoy popularity.

Overall Efficiency Vs On-Standard Efficiency

You may know the definition of Efficiency. You may know how to calculate the efficiency of a production line or an individual sewing operator. But do you know - What is On-standard efficiency and overall efficiency? How to calculate on-standard efficiency and overall efficiency? What are the differences between these two efficiency terms? These are the new terms to many industrial engineers and production people. If these terms are also new to you, read this post. Workers performance and production line performance is measured in efficiency. Efficiency is calculated using the formula that we have discussed in  an earlier post  with an example. Efficiency Calculation formula   Efficiency (%) = (Total minutes produced / Total minutes attended at work)*100  When the On-Standard Efficiency and Overall Efficiency are measured In a normal workday, operators spend their total attended time following categories doing standard work doing off-standard work (doing a...

COSTING FOR A SPINNING MILL

INTRODUCTION: It is better to review the basics concepts, costing methods and techniques and elements of costing before we work out a costing for a spinning mill. Cost accounting is a system of determining the costs of products or services. It has primarily developed to meet the needs of management. It provides detailed cost information to various levels of management for efficient performance of their functions. Financial accounting provides information about profit , loss, cost etc., of the collective activities of the business as a whole. It does not give the data regarding costs by departments, products, processes and sales territories etc. Financial accounting does not fully analyse the losses due to idle time, idle plant capacity, inefficient labour, sub-standard materials, etc. Cost accounting is not restricted to past. It is concerned with the ascertainment of past, present and expected future costs of products manufactured or services supplied. Cost account...
